The old way to get to Camber Sands

Came across this fantastic picture of the old train that used to run from Rye to Camber Sands. The Camber Sands station was opened in July 1908, extending the line out past the golf course, where it had previously terminated.

The Rye and Camber Tramways Company said that the station brought passengers “far from the madding crowd”, which it did. It was hard to get to Camber  any other way 100 years ago, and the sands would have been almost empty, even in mid-summer.

The full  story is here.

Love the train – that’s the way to arrive in Camber for sure. Shame they junked it!
